EG.QL's trip to Sweden ended up much shorter than intended or expected, after both Tim 'DaHanG' Fogarty and Chance Lacina left their respective Groups as the second seed and died out completely by the Quarter Finals of the Single Elimination Bracket.
Group play proved to be be tough for both players, with DaHanG in Group A against Alexander 'Z4muz' Ihrfors (The player that went on to eliminate the other American player in the tournament, Brian 'dkt' Flander, in the Quarter-Final and now faces Allesandro 'Stermy' Avallone in the Semi-Final) and Chance in Group G against Stermy. Both players fell in 1-2 sets, and both players finished as the second seed of their Groups with a 2-1 record. It seemed as though ztn proved to be a tough map for the EG.QL players while playing against some of the top tier QL talent, but that still could just be a coincidence.
The Single Elimination Bracket came up immediately after the Groups ended and the Brackets were drawn, with Chance battling the young gun Alexei 'Cypher' Yanushevsky and DaHanG taking on the tough swede competitor, Sebastian 'spart1e' Siira. Chance struggled immediately against Cypher, falling in a 0-2 set on dm13 and tourney9. DaHanG had better results against spart1e, winning tourney9 before dropping dm13, only to pull it together and close the set with a one sided tourney7.
Up next for DaHanG was the red hot and legendary Russian dueler, Anton 'Cooller' Singov. Even from Group Play, Cooller looked to be in top form, not even allowing an opponent to take even a single map. By the time Cooller had walked through Magnus 'Fox' Olsson, few believed he could be stopped. DaHanG came straight out of the gate looking to prove everyone wrong and take down the fired up Cooller. It was an effort that looked possible, with DaHanG taking an early lead with tourney9, but as the map drew to a close, Cooller looked to be gaining momentum and regaining his hot streak with vicious pop-up rockets, a mean LG and a rail that didn't make anyone's lives easier.
The second map proved to be a brutal run for DaHanG, with Cooller working ztn over to a 11-1 lead that seemed to rip the momentum right from DaHanG's hands. The final map, dm6, looked to be fairly balanced between the two, with DaHanG making some aggressive moves to fight Cooller off of the mega health with his LG, which actually worked a few times, but Cooller knew when he had done enough damage to put pressure on right from a respawn, and with DaHanG being effectively locked out of the map by Cooller, it all went into the Russian's favor. A few close range rocket suicides and craters took away from the frags that DaHanG had earned to keep the early game alive, so while the 12-0 score looks brutal, it really all had become much more one-sided in the final few minutes.
It was still a fantastic effort from EG.QL, and DaHanG managed to draw first blood on a Cooller who looks to be in shape to take the entire event pending any major changes overnight. EG fans need to keep in mind that the Quake scene is finally heating up, and we're seeing our boys competing more and more often, so you can expect DaHanG and Chance to be working towards revenge soon enough.
