OVERTURE:
Just the name, cp_gravelpit, no doubt brings back a flood of painful memories for EG.TF2 - it was, after all, the map on which last season's ESEA-Invite champions, compLexity, dealt the final blow to our beloved home squad, sweeping EG in two straight, not very competitive rounds for a 2-0 win. It is a map that EG has had inconsistent results on, once dominating the format but having of late come up short in big-time matches. And cp_gravelpit, unfortunately, has a tendency to by that bo3 tiebreaking map in most Grand Finals, following cp_badlands and cp_granary.
For all the Counter-Strike fans out there exploring some of EG's other divisions, cp_gravelpit works a little like a one-sided version of the old Day of Defeat zone maps, with two points (A and B) up for grabs in which ever order the attackers (Blue) prefer, followed by a final point (C) near the defenders (Red) respawn that is only made available once A and B are captured. In most matches, the attackers will eventually succeed in capturing all 3 points due to their advantage in respawn time (Blue respawns much quicker then Red, and with good reason - the most boring match in the world is when Red stifles Blue's attacks and basically just waits out the clock), so it is ultimately up to how fast one team captures all three that determines the winner.
In this sense, the stopwatch format, for which cp_gravelpit is the one and only decent version, is an entirely different beast for a team to attack; for every little mistake made either on attack or defense, precious seconds tick away (or are added) on the clock that will ultimately decide the winner. For the attackers, there is no falling back to defend choke points and limit the damage like on cp_push maps - yet, by the same token, heedlessly flinging oneself into the fray will be as much a detriment to the team. Attacks must be coordinated in ever sense of the word, and often the team with a combo that is calm, collected and in sync will win out.
For tonight, EG faces a couple new (and damn hungry) teams looking to shed off the label of "lower-tier" and take a shot at one of the defined top dogs in the scene - to which EG will no doubt happily oblige. Loaded currently sits with a solid 5-2 record, including one win over EG already earlier in the season, but their record is inflated with a couple auto-FF wins (thanks to MoB dying) and they still have a great deal to prove if they want to be considered a top-tier team. On the backend of tonight's Doubleheader (took me this long to say it, but, YES, ANOTHER DOUBLEHEADER!!) is dynamic, the current bottomdwellers of the ESEA-Invite standings, though they've been playing much better of late and even snagged back-to-back wins over Blight & coL recently after losing their first 6 matches. While both teams are well within EG's realm of "beatable", neither should be taken very lightly in this ever-changing TF2 hierarchy that stretches ever closer to parody.
Both matches are for ESEA-Invite, and therefore will feature their own SpecTVs for your viewing pleasure - be sure to keep an eye on the scoreboards (link provided) for you IPs, which will go up 15 minutes before the match.
UPDATE: There was a TF2 update released, which means the ESEA Client will also require an update - all matches are on hold until that happens, so it's anyone's guess if tonight's matches happen.
